Help...

Okay I am going to expose a little of myself here which is hard and a bit embarrassing but I am willing to take the first step. I need help, advice and words of encouragement. So, here it is: I am Mckenzie and I am a foodaholic. I would really like to get back into exercising and eating right. Any advice from those of you who are diligent and good or who have lost weight and can give me some good advice on how to do it. I am not going to go another year to Hawaii being in my "miracle swimsuit, loose 10lbs instantly". What I really need is a schedule of when and how much to exercise (some personal agendas are welcome) and what to eat (also personal food intake welcome). So, if you have advice I'd love to hear it. Here is to the New Year!

Oh geez, you are totally like me for sure. You're brave; I was going to blog about it then I chickened out. I started something new a few weeks ago and I have started losing for the first time in forever! I need to email you and I will tell you about it. Email me tomorrow if you have time and I can tell you all about it, I'm off to bed right now. joniradams@gmail.com

Whatever you choose to do, stick with it. It took me 8 weeks of eating healthy and doing some ridiculously hard exercising (for me) before I shed a single pound. Sometimes the ole' metabolism just takes a good long while to figure out what we're trying to do. I don't think there's a magic plan, but everybody has to do what works for them. I exercise 6 days a week (3 days really tough, 3 days not as tough) and I only eat treats or sweets and desserts on Sunday. I realize that's not some fabulous program to follow, but it's what works for me. Just find what works for you that's reasonable and stick with it. You can do it!!

Advice and encouragement... love yourself no matter the number on the scale or little addiction. Don't be so hard on yourself when you slip cuz you will slip but from that point start again & do better. I find it interesting that when we enter the family life style and take care of the home, our spouse and then children food tends to be of more priority; of course because as women we care, nurture & feed our family. It seems to always be in our face. Not like the single days of caring for yourself & some days forgetting to even eat. We all go through it. Don't be embarrassed. I think the best thing is a food journal. You can keep track of all that you intake & those sweet snacks here and there seem to not be worth eating just to have to write down. You can also track & see when it is that you're eating, be it emotional or what not and then change it. Also, Diogo got me this Polar6 heart monitor that goes around your chest and comes with a wrist watch that interacts with it. It tracks your heart rate, calories burned, time frame, etc. So with this plus the journal you can really track your intake to what you've burned. I hiked the Koko Head Crater (1,000 plus steps going straight up) the other day and burned 514 calories in just 44 mins. No way am I going to eat a burger & fries after seeing those numbers, ya know. So both, I think, really help track and show improvements; which we all love to see. There is a higher power there to help too. No matter how small or big a problem or habit he can always help us over come anything. You can do it!

Oh yeah, and it takes 21 days to brake a habit. That's what my husband always tells me. So keep with it. In no time you'll be enjoying every minute under the Hawaiian sun with no worries.

So before I got pregnant again I was exercising 2-3 days a week for about 20 min cardio, and then did some stretching and crunches. I was just trying to stay active. I think starting out small, and then increasing what you do will have more last effects. Decide what time your willing to give to it and start out that way. If you are too overwhelmed with it, then you will more likely quit. You can always add more exercise as your stamina increases. Eating at home and actually cooking from scratch, seems to be the best decision. Eating out always will give you more calories. Decide how many times you will eat out a month and stick to it. (We usually do 2-3 times.) As for sweets we try to stick to about once a week, sometimes we slip and do it twice a week. I hope this will help you.

Ok, even after being a trainer, I have an aversion to giving people advice on this topic unless it's solicited. And I guess you asked for it, so here's my two cents ...
It comes down to this: "calories in vs. calories out*." Honestly, I think the best thing that you can do is commit yourself to eating small, healthful meals 6 times a day. And when I say meals, I don't mean in the American sense of the word. Focus on s-m-a-l-l, less on MEAL. Just eat until you're satisfied, not stuffed. And of course, work out. But remember, eat so you can workout, don't workout so you can eat. The average person only burns 200-300 calories during a workout, so any amount of over-eating is going to be hard to burn off, even if you are going to the gym every day. Be sure to keep a great attitude and allow for flexibility. Don't be too hard on yourself or set unrealistic goals, that just leads to burn-out. Above all, remember that you are a BEAUTIFUL, amazing girl no matter what the scale says (that's another thing, I hate scales! Get off it! What is it telling you anyway? Go by body fat %age instead, or just the way your pants fit. Much better indicators). Anyway, I could go on and on. If you want to talk more about it, give me a call. I'll email you my number. Good luck!
